We've dealt with the original Nintendo System the NES.
We've dealt with the more super version the Super Nintendo
Now it's time to round out this trilogy of retro nintendo consoles and talk about the N64.
Ah, so many good memories lie with this console.
But enough about that we need to get cracking on this review, especially since it's been 4 months since my last one. It been so long in fact I had to go back to my past blog post to remind myself how I score the game.
Was that a useless plug. Ah whatever. On to today's game Pokemon snap.
Story-The Story of the game is simple. You play as a boy named todd who's goal is to take a picture of the elusive Pokemon Mew. Prof. Oak also wants you to snap a picture of every Pokemon on Pokemon island. So yay it's a game about picture taking. Doesn't sound to fun but you'll be surprised.
Gameplay
This game is an on rail picture taking game. You don't move your character instead the vehicle your in move you around the level and all you have to do is snap pictures of Pokemon. Your goal is to take a picture of every Pokemon in the level. However you don't have to to complete the game. You
advance levels by finding hidden passage ways or by getting a certain amount of points from the
professor. You see oak give every Pokemon picture you decide to show him a score and it's fun trying to rank up the highest score you can for each Pokemon. If you get a certain amount of points with
your pictures you oak will allow you to visit a new area or give you an item. (like a poke ball filled
with poison that knocks Pokemon out. Not only that though oak give extra points for Pokemon
knocked out). There are many ways to gain and lose points and like I said its fun trying to get the highest amount of points possible for each Pokemon. Now I know taking pictures of Pokemon doesn't sound like the most fun. It it still is pretty fun. And that's mostly due to how incredible the levels are designed. They look great and make you wanna look and explore around them. They're just fun to go through. I gotta say it's also kind of cool seeing Pokemon just chilling in their natural habitats. Not in any kind of battle at all. Plus as I said the game really makes you wanna get the highest score for each Pokemon, and snap pictures of them all. So yeah the gameplay is pretty good. It's just a laid back calming experience with a calming atmosphere to top it off.
Gameplay Score-7/10
Looks
The game looks pretty good. Nothing special but the Pokemon models look great and so do the anime looking humans. By N64 standards it good. Even though the n64 was the awkward polygonal 3d stage for gaming it's not really to polygonal and the levels and 3d models all look pretty nice
Looks Score-7/10
Sound
The sound is ok. There are a few memorable tracks but even those are just meh. It's a calm game so I don't expect music I can rock out to but I still expect tracks that while keeping the calm atmosphere
still sound good. This games music does keep the atmosphere but the music is just dull overall.
There are also a few brief voice clips for oak every now and then. They sound pretty good
Sound Score-5.5/10
Enjoyment
I really enjoyed Snap. It was a fun interesting and calming experience. It made me wanna take as many Pokemon pictures as I could, and discover all the secrets of Pokemon island.
This is a perfect example of a game with a concept that doesn't sound good and making a good game out of it.
Enjoyment score-15.5/20
Overall-35/50. 70%-C
Oh, just barely misses out on getting a D. Well then. I do think this game is a truly fun game though and I recommend that you check it out. Weather your a fan of Pokemon or not.
It definitely deserves a higher score than 70 percent, but whatever I'm not going to change my previous scores for each category just so the game will get a higher percentage. (That would be cheating)
Hope you enjoyed my epic return. See you guys next time which hopefully won't be in 4 months but thanks for reading. Next time I'll be dealing with an NES game that's about superheroes but in reality is just pure evil.
See you guys then.
